Workers treated after ammonia leak at Schaumburg pizza factory

Six employees at the Nation Pizza and Foods plant in Schaumburg were treated after an ammonia leak Wednesday afternoon.

The outbreak occurred as a result to a bad valve in the facility at 601 E Algonquin Road, authorities said. Employees contained the leak and evacuated the building immediately, Schaumburg police Sgt. Christy Lindhurst said.

Three of the six employees who needed medical care were treated and released on the scene, Lindhurst said. Two were transported to a nearby hospital with nonlife-threatening conditions and one was transported to the hospital for an unrelated issue.

Schaumburg emergency response units arrived to the facility at 1:15 p.m., testing the air quality in the building before workers were allowed to return, Lindhurst said.

The eastbound lanes Algonquin Road and southbound Quentin Road near the facility were closed during the emergency response, but have since reopened.
