Teen in good condition after rescue by Naperville lifeguards

The 13-year-old boy rescued by a Centennial Beach lifeguard Thursday evening in Naperville is in good condition and the beach reopened Friday for normal operations.

Ray McGury, executive director of the Naperville Park District, said the boy jumped from a low diving board around 5:45 p.m. Thursday and did not resurface.

"I don't know specifically how or why he got himself into trouble while in the 15-foot section of our water," McGury said. "Our lifeguards were focused on applying lifesaving techniques and weren't able to ascertain the reason by speaking with him."

After rescuing the boy and getting him safely to the pool deck, lifeguards felt a faint heartbeat and began CPR. McGury said the boy was conscious and breathing when paramedics took him to Edward Hospital. Without his name, Edward officials were unable to confirm any information about the boy's condition Friday.

"I'm very proud of the entire lifeguard team and Centennial Beach staff that took part in this incident yesterday," McGury said. "A term I've used as a former police officer as well as the executive director is 'When the time to perform arrives, the time to prepare has past'. Our Centennial Beach staff certainly embodies this."

Centennial Beach, which opened for the season Saturday, closed shortly after the boy was taken to the hospital and remained closed for the night.
