The early portion of the high school spring sports season is always a mess, but this year seemed messier than usual. In my nearly 20 years covering things out here I can't remember a year where so many baseball, softball and even soccer games were canceled due to rain or snow. So seeing clouds of dirt and dust on every ground ball at a recent softball game at Larkin High School in Elgin made me much happier than it really should have. I was having an Ernie Banks moment; "It's a great day for a ballgame; let's play two!" Or something like that. I wasn't there when he said it, but you know what I mean.
