Route 176 near Mundelein reopens after 3-vehicle crash

A three-vehicle crash near Mundelein shut down a much-traveled stretch of Route 176 Friday morning.

The accident occurred about 5:15 a.m. on Route 176 near Hawley Street, west of Mundelein.

A Waukegan man was driving west in an Infiniti G35 and fell asleep behind the wheel, a Lake County sheriff's police spokesman said.

His car hit a Nicor truck driven by a 55-year-old Carpentersville man and then a Chevrolet Cruze driven by a 58-year-old Fox River Grove woman. Both of those vehicles were headed east.

After the two collisions, the Infiniti drive down an embankment before stopping, police said.

The Waukegan man and the Nicor truck driver were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville by ambulance. The woman driving the Cruze was taken to the hospital by her husband, police said.

None of their injuries were life-threatening.

Route 176 reopened to motorists about 6:30 a.m.

The driver of the Infiniti - identified as Oliver Lopez, 20, of the 1000 block of Merton Avenue - was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and not having proof of insurance.
