New Jersey company recycles what others don't

By Elena Ferrarin

TerraCycle, based in Trenton, New Jersey, offers programs to recycle so-called "hard-to-recycle" waste in partnership with companies around the world, including Barilla, Arm & Hammer, Febreze, Brita, Colgate, L'Occitane and many others.

Approximately 20 million people across the U.S. participate in TerraCycle's free recycling program and its paid "zero waste box" programs, said Lauren Taylor, the company's global vice president for communications.

"We recycle roughly 20 million pounds of traditionally non-recyclable waste per year. This includes material (that) has been collected through our free collection programs, our zero waste box platform, and our large freight recycling programs," she said.

TerraCycle recycles all of the compliant waste material it receives for its program, Taylor said.

"In the occasional instance that a consumer sends in waste that is not accepted in a given program, that material is responsibly disposed of," she said. "This amounts to a negligible single-digit percentage of the total waste we receive."
