Area police go vertical for Special Olympics fundraiser

Police agencies throughout Lake County and across the suburbs teamed up with Dunkin' Donuts in their towns Friday morning for the 16th annual Cop on a Rooftop event.

The fundraiser for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois features police officers perched on the roofs of Dunkin' Donuts to solicit contributions from customers. Donors receive a coupon for a free doughnut in return for a contribution.

Officials hope to raise $720,000 this year from the event, which was held statewide with around 293 locations participating. More than $3.9 million has been raised from past Cop on a Rooftop events.
