Neuqua Valley student accused of having knives in locker

A student at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville is facing a felony charge after knives were found in the student's locker, officials said.

On May 3, the juvenile student was found in possession of several knives, including one illegal switchblade, Naperville police said. They took the juvenile into custody Wednesday.

The student was charged with felony disorderly conduct. Under Illinois law, someone can commit disorderly conduct when he or she conveys "a threat of violence, death or bodily harm directed against persons at a school."

The student also faces a misdemeanor charge of unlawful use of a weapon for possessing an illegal switchblade, police said.

In a statement to parents posted on the school's website, Principal Bob McBride said the district is taking the incident seriously.

"We received information last week that one of our students made a poor decision and brought several knives to school," the statement read. "We immediately contacted the Naperville Police Department and confirmed that the student did have knives in his locker. Please know, at no time were any of our students or staff threatened or in any danger."

Authorities said they can't release any more information because the student is a juvenile.

This is the second such incident at Neuqua Valley in as many months.

On April 23, 18-year-old Neuqua Valley senior Samuel Rogers was charged with felony disorderly conduct after police said he made threats of gun violence against the school on social media.

Rogers was released on bond with GPS monitoring and is due in court for a bond hearing May 18.

A spokesperson with Indian Prairie School District 204, which includes Neuqua Valley, declined to provide additional comment.
