Des Plaines police: Lake in the Hills man hit former boss with car in murder attempt

A Lake in the Hills man charged with attempted murder is accused of striking his former boss with a vehicle during a robbery attempt in Des Plaines, police said.

Des Plaines police say Paul Metz, 44, went to the Des Plaines home of his former boss on the 500 block of East Oakton Street and struck the 61-year-old man with his vehicle about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. When officers arrived at the scene, Metz was trying to put the man into his car after attempting to rob him, police said. Metz fled in his vehicle, attempting to strike several officers with the car as he left, police said.

Metz led officers on a high-speed chase west on Oakton Street but lost control and crashed into a townhouse on the 1500 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, police said. Officers arrested Metz, who was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for his crash injuries.

The victim also was taken to the hospital and is being treated for severe injuries, police said.

Metz was ordered held without bond after a hearing Friday at the Skokie courthouse, court records show. His next court hearing is May 11.

According to police, Metz used the same vehicle during a robbery Sunday night at a convenience store in Algonquin.

Metz also is charged with fleeing and eluding, reckless driving and driving with a revoked license, police said.
