School bus driver from Lake in the Hills charged with DUI after crash

A school bus driver in Crystal Lake Elementary District 47 has been charged with a DUI after his bus struck another bus Wednesday morning.

Wayne Desparte, 75, of the 4300 block of Greenfield Drive in Lake in the Hills, was driving a loaded school bus when he crashed into an empty school bus in the parking lot of Hannah Beardsley Middle School, 515 E. Crystal Lake Ave., at 7:40 a.m., according to the Crystal Lake Police Department. There were no injuries reported.

The authorities believe Desparte also struck a black Jeep Renegade on his way to the school Wednesday morning while traveling south on Terra Cotta Road. Police are seeking the driver or owner of the Jeep and ask anyone with information about the crash to call (815) 356-3620.

According to the police department, Desparte may have been under the influence of prescription drugs while driving the school bus. He has been charged with one count of aggravated driving under the influence and one count of child endangerment.

Desparte is in custody at the McHenry County jail pending his bond hearing.
