Two charged with murder in fatal shootings of two Elgin men

Two Chicago men have been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal weekend shootings of two Elgin men in an apartment complex parking lot on the west side of Elgin near Wing Park.

Travaris Stevenson. 22, of the 5000 block of W. Congress Parkway, was charged with eight counts of first-degree murder, and Lee Spain, 32, of the 8000 block of S. Ellis Street, was charged with four counts of first-degree murder.

The shooting happened around 2:08 p.m. Sunday, and within 20 minutes officers located and arrested both Stevenson and Spain, who both matched the description of the possible shooters, police said Tuesday night.

"The arrest of Mr. Spain and Mr. Stevenson are a direct result of people in our community becoming immediately involved by notifying 911 and providing statements as to what they saw and heard," Deputy Chief Bill Wolf said. "Because of their information, officers were able to

quickly apprehend subjects that matched those descriptions.

Neither victim - Mark McDaniel, 26, and Raymond Dyson, 29, both of Elgin - lived at the Garden Quarter Apartments, where the shooting occurred.

Dyson died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Cook County medical examiner's report. He had been taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital and transferred to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The DuPage County coroner's office would not release details of McDaniel's wounds. He had been taken to Presence St. Joseph's Hospital, then also transferred to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

"We hope the arrests help to begin the healing process for the families of the victims, and the Elgin community," Wolf said.

Earlier Tuesday, police spokeswoman Kristie Hilton said one of the people police had detained was familiar with both victims.

Stevenson and Spain were also charged with one count each of unlawful possession of cannabis and unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to deliver.

Stevenson and Spain will appear in Kane County bond court Wednesday.

Police said the investigation continues and anyone with pertinent information is encouraged to call them (847) 289-2600, or text 847411 and include ELGINPD at the beginning of the text, along with a message and/or tip information.
