Police: Guns, ammo taken from Vernon Hills teen who wore white supremacist shirt at college

A Vernon Hills teen who wore clothing touting a white supremacist group has been charged with misdemeanors for possessing several firearms and magazines without a valid FOID card, authorities said.

On April 7, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told Vernon Hills police they had received an anonymous tip that Jakub Zak, 19, had been seen at the College of Lake County wearing a T-shirt promoting a group known as the Patriot Front, according to a news release from the Vernon Hills Police Department.

Patriot Front is a white nationalist group that organizes demonstrations and posts flyers promoting white supremacy and fascism, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks extremist groups across the United States.

“Patriot Front espouses racism, anti-Semitism and intolerance under the guise of preserving the ‘ethnic and cultural origins' of their European ancestors,” according to the Anti-Defamation League.

Officials for the College of Lake County couldn't be reached for comment. An ATF representative said the agency does not comment on ongoing investigations.

Authorities searched Zak's home on the 300 block of Ashwood Court. Inside, they found several firearms, boxes of ammunition, empty magazines and other miscellaneous firearm parts, the news release said.

On April 16, Zak was charged with two misdemeanors: unlawful possession of a firearm without a FOID card and unlawful possession of ammunition without a FOID card.

Zak was ordered to turn over his guns and ammunition to police, officials said. He was released after posting a $150 cash bond and is due in court May 17.
