Fire displaces several Elmhurst seniors

The Elmhurst Fire Department was called to Greencastle of Elmhurst, a senior living community building, at 8:13 a.m. with a report of a kitchen fire. According to Lieutenant Steve Reynolds, the small stove fire had already been extinguished by the sprinklers when crews arrived on scene.

According to Greencastle manager Harold Eich, the fire was caused when papers next to a resident's stove caught on fire. Eich said that a few units sustained minimal smoke and water damage. While Greencastle works to repair the affected units, several residents have been temporarily displaced from their apartments.

"We've put the residents up at a hotel in the community at Greencastle's expense" and "provided grocery and transportation service for them to make sure they are comfortable," Eich said. He did not have a complete count of affected residents but said they should be able to return to their apartments in a few days.
