A Glen Ellyn man was sentenced to 23 years in prison Thursday for the 2015 armed robbery of a 7-Eleven in Carol Stream.

On Jan. 26, 2015, Johnny Holmes, now 26, and another man entered a 7-Eleven convenience store in Carol Stream - Holmes was armed with a handgun, according to a news release from the DuPage County state's attorney's office. Holmes demanded money from the clerk and fled the scene with $180 in cash, the release said.

A short time after the robbery, Holmes fled and was later apprehended after police tried to question him, officials said. He was charged with one count of armed violence and one count of armed robbery and has remained in custody at the DuPage County jail since, according to the release.

Holmes was found guilty of both counts after a three-day trial in January. He was sentenced to 23 years for the armed robbery and 15 years for armed violence Thursday. Holmes will serve those sentences concurrently, officials said.

Under Illinois law, Holmes must serve at least 50 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
