Cook County Sheriff's officer saves overdose victim at Elk Grove Township hotel

A Cook County Sheriff's officer used the anti-opiate drug naloxone to revive a woman suffering from an apparent overdose at an Elk Grove Township hotel Monday morning, Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Tuesday.

It is the first time a member of the sheriff's office has used naloxone to rescue an overdose victim since the department began equipping officers with it in June 2016, officials said.

At about 8:05 a.m. Monday, the officer responded to a call of suspicious circumstances at a hotel room in the 1900 block of East Higgins Road, authorities said. Upon entering the room, the officer found a woman unresponsive with a syringe nearby. He administered the naloxone and the 28-year-old Rockford woman woke up about a minute later.

Elk Grove Township Fire Department paramedics transported her to an area hospital for further treatment.
