6 years prison for man accused of St. Charles, Elburn burglaries

A 25-year-old man recently was sentenced to six years in prison after admitting to burglarizing a house last year in unincorporated Kane County near St. Charles.

David J. Teafoe Jr., of the 6N100 block of Riverside Drive, St. Charles, was charged with two counts of residential burglary and four counts of burglary in connection with June 1, 2017 burglaries to a vehicle and two houses on Blue Stem Court near St. Charles and a burglary to a vehicle on Citation Lane near Elburn.

Teafoe pleaded guilty to felony residential burglary of $300, a garage door opener, eight pairs of sunglasses, reading glasses, ski goggles, a radar detector and phone charger from a house on Blue Stem, according to Kane County court records.

The plea agreement, in which prosecutors dismissed remaining charges, was accepted by Judge John Barsanti.

Defense attorney Matt Downs said he did not know why Teafoe committed the burglaries, other than it was a poor decision.

"He's a hardworking guy. His family is devastated," Downs said. "He made a terrible mistake.

Because of Teafoe's previous convictions, such as a 2013 burglary in DuPage County for which he served half his seven-year sentence, he was eligible for an enhanced prison term of six to 30 years without any chance of probation.

Under state law, Teafoe can have his six-year sentence cut in half for good behavior.

He also receives credit for 238 days served at the Kane County jail while his case was pending.
