Two found dead after Highland Park house fire

Two people were found dead inside a Highland Park house early Wednesday after a massive fire, officials said.

The bodies hadn't been identified as of late Wednesday afternoon. Autopsies were being conducted by the Lake County coroner's office.

Firefighters responded to the blaze on the 2000 block of Kipling Lane in the High Ridge neighborhood about 1:15 a.m. They could not enter the two-story house because of heavy smoke and flames.

Highland Park firefighters and 10 other departments extinguished the fire. The bodies were discovered afterward.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The fire department did not report any damage to neighboring properties, and no firefighters were hurt.

"We are appreciative of the swift response and collaboration of all agencies involved and deeply saddened by the loss of life," Fire Chief Larry Amidei said in a news release.
