North Aurora middle school may get police officer

North Aurora is considering stationing a police officer part-time at Jewel Middle School, 1501 Waterford Road.

It's not because of any specific incident, Police Chief David Fisher said.

"It is something that I have wanted to do. I feel an officer in the school builds relationships with the students, acts as a crime prevention measure, and handle issues within the school that would otherwise take an officer off the street," Fisher said.

The village board will vote on the agreement with West Aurora District 129 Monday night.

The officer would work at the school 16 hours a week, and could start as soon as Tuesday, according to Fisher.

West Aurora's other middle schools have had school resource officers for several years. There are also officers in the Oswego District 308, Indian Prairie District 204 and East Aurora District 131 middle schools in Aurora.
