Vernon Hills police warn of IRS scams

The Vernon Hills Police Department is cautioning people to be aware of IRS scams during income tax preparation season. These scams have been around for years, but police say they often receive calls from unsuspecting residents who are duped into scams. Police say IRS will never demand immediate payment over the phone, will not call about taxes owed without first having mailed several letters, will never call or email to ask about personal and financial information, will not require a specific payment method for taxes, or ask for a credit or debit card numbers over phone or email. Anyone who believes they have received an IRS call should call 911 immediately. Recipients can also contact the IRS at (800) 829-1040 or at irs.gov.
