Chain saw attacker sentenced to 21 years in prison

A chain saw-wielding Arlington Heights man who chased down another man and nearly severed his arm was sentenced to 21 years in prison Tuesday.

Jose A. Jaimes-Jimenez, 27, turned to the victim during a hearing at the Rolling Meadows courthouse, apologized and asked his forgiveness, according to prosecutors. The victim said he forgave Jaimes-Jimenez, who pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder. He must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.

The June 2017 attack was described as "a scene out of a horror movie" by the bond court judge who last year ordered Jaimes-Jimenez held on $2.5 million bail.

According to prosecutors, Jaimes-Jimenez was upset that the other man was dating his estranged wife. As the couple prepared to leave an office complex parking lot along Golf Road in Arlington Heights in the victim's car at about 1 p.m. June 19, Jaimes-Jimenez used his vehicle to block them in, prosecutors said.

As the victim tried to leave the parking lot by another exit, Jaimes-Jimenez followed and rammed the victim's car with such force that both air bags deployed, prosecutors said.

Both men left their vehicles, with Jaimes-Jimenez holding a running chain saw and chasing the victim until he stumbled and fell, prosecutors said. As the man raised his arms to protect himself, Jaimes-Jimenez attacked, cutting through bone and leaving the man's left arm attached by skin and tendon.

The chain saw jammed and the victim kicked his attacker and ran to an office building, where four others provided aid.

Scott Frost and Mark Hewitt, of Tri-Guards Inc., pulled the bleeding man inside to safety. Co-workers Deborah Bauer and Valerie Valadez helped apply a tourniquet and pressure dressings to stem the bleeding.

All four received commendations from the Arlington Heights Police Department and the village for their efforts.
