Wauconda police honored by park district for time spent in community
Whether it's playing basketball with local children or picnicking with senior citizens, Wauconda police officers spend countless hours with residents in situations that don't involve ticket books or handcuffs.
And now they're being honored for those efforts.
The police department has received a community service award from the Wauconda Park District, the Illinois Park and Recreation Association and the Illinois Association of Park Districts.
The award recognizes the department's "unselfish devotion for the advancement of parks, recreation and leisure" in Wauconda and Illinois.
More specifically, it lauds the time officers spend with residents during events, including one for seniors called Summertime Fun on Bangs Lake, the annual National Night Out gathering and the monthly Kids vs. Cops athletic activities.
The award also celebrates the police department's public safety role at the parks, which includes routine patrols and assisting with security at the annual Wauconda Fest celebration.
Park district Recreation Superintendent Tim Staton said the police department has become "a very important part of the parks and recreation system" in Wauconda.
"The Wauconda Park District values our relationship with the Wauconda Police Department and wanted to offer a special thanks for everything that they do for us and the community," Staton said.
Staton presented Deputy Police Chief Mike Botterman with the award during this week's village board meeting.
Village Trustee Tim Howe said community events, such as Wauconda Fest and National Night Out, are "great opportunities for our officers to interact with the public, fostering trust and building the relationships so necessary to modern police work."
Police Chief David Wermes said he appreciates the park district's recognition of his officers' efforts and their dedication to the community.
