Authorities: Deputy didn't do his job properly during domestic altercation

A Lake County sheriff's deputy has been charged with official misconduct after he didn't properly do his job when responding to a domestic altercation, authorities announced Friday.

Deputy Leonard Patterson, 38, of the 1100 block of Knight Court in Port Barrington, surrendered Friday after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The felony charges stem from a November 2017 incident. Patterson responded to a call from Waukegan police about a domestic altercation that began in the sheriff's jurisdiction, police said.

While in a moving car together, a man hit a woman in the face, police said. They stopped in Waukegan and the woman asked a good Samaritan to call for help.

According to the sheriff's office, Patterson failed to investigate the woman's complaint or speak with anyone involved. He also didn't give the woman assistance and encouraged her to get back in the car with the man who hit her, police said.

Sheriff Mark Curran ordered an internal investigation into the case after learning of the incident. Patterson was placed on administrative leave and relieved of his police powers.

Patterson has worked as a sheriff's deputy since 2008. Disciplinary proceedings are ongoing.

Patterson was released Friday after posting bail. He is scheduled to appear in court April 5.
