Man charged in Vernon Hills robbery

An Elk Grove Village man is held in Lake County jail on charges associated with a robbery reported March 2 in Vernon Hills.

Christopher J. Gordon, 35, of the 600 block of East Elk Grove Boulevard, was charged with aggravated robbery, robbery, theft and three traffic offenses, including aggravated fleeing/eluding a police officer, in connection with a burglary at the Peacock Market Place and Car Wash, 860 S. Milwaukee Ave.

At 5:05 p.m., March 2, Vernon Hills police were called and told by an employee a man placed his hand in his pocket as if he had a weapon and demanded money and cigarettes. No weapon was observed but the employee placed an undisclosed amount of money into a plastic bag as instructed, police said.

Police were told the offender drove away in a white box truck, which was seen heading west on Route 45 at Woodlands Parkway.

The truck would not stop and police pursued it west on Route 45, south on Route 83 and south on Arlington Heights Road before ending the chase on Arlington Heights Road near Hintz Road.

A short time later, an Illinois State Police trooper stopped the truck in Des Plaines.

According to police, Gordon left the truck and was apprehended as he tried to run away. A plastic bag containing money was found near the suspect but a weapon was not recovered, according to police.

Vernon Hills police said Tuesday that Gordon was held on $150,000 bail. A court date set for March 21.
