Floor collapses in Long Grove house fire

Fire officials are investigating the cause a fire Thursday morning that left a Long Grove home uninhabitable and resulted in an injury to one firefighter.

Kevin Wodrich, battalion chief for the Countryside Fire Protection District, said the department responded about 9:30 a.m. to a call from a resident about a fire in the basement of a two-story home on the 4800 block of Pond View Court.

Smoke was coming from the front of the home when firefighters arrived seven minutes later. Several departments in Lake and Cook counties responded.

Multiple crews quickly began applying water from the interior until first floor collapsed into the basement, according to Wodrich. Crews left the building and began strategically applying water from outside.

"The floor collapse was an anomaly," he said. "Everybody evacuated the house and we started lobbing water in through the windows."

Three residents were home at the time and said the fire was in the basement. All got out safely before firefighters arrived, Wodrich said.

No damage estimate was given, but Wodrich estimated the size of the house at about 5,000 square feet.

One firefighter was taken to a hospital with a shoulder injury that was not life-threatening.

Countryside was assisted by departments from Gurnee, Round Lake, Grayslake, Libertyville, Knollwood, Lake Bluff, Lincolnshire, Mundelein, Wauconda, Highland Park, Wheeling, Palatine and Barrington.
