Elk Grove Village businessman crushed to death at workplace

The co-owner of an Elk Grove Village manufacturing company was crushed to death between two slabs of stone at his workplace Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Ilan Abergel, 57, of Skokie was found pinned between two large pieces of marble about 4:25 p.m. inside Quartz Master, 1620 Jarvis Ave., authorities said.

Abergel apparently was trying to move the stone slabs, which had been stacked vertically against each other, when he became trapped, Deputy Chief Michael Gaspari said. Elk Grove Village police continue to seek witnesses and surveillance video to investigate the death. However, investigators believe Abergel was alone, Gaspari said.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration also is investigating. The Cook County medical examiner's office conducted an autopsy Thursday and determined Abergel's death to be accidental.

Quartz Master produces and sells quartz, marble, granite and other stone products for kitchen countertops and other uses.
