Waukegan man held on $2 million bail in fatal knife fight

A Waukegan man is being held on $2 million bail after stabbing one person to death and injuring three others during a fight outside a Waukegan restaurant, authorities said Monday.

Jonathon Celis, 23, was arrested shortly after the stabbing at the La Canoa Restaurant at 50 S. Green Bay Road, authorities said.

Police were called for reports of a large fight in the parking lot about 2 a.m. Saturday.

Four victims - all in their mid-20s and from the Lake County area - had been stabbed during the fight. They were all taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Oscar R. Castaneda, 24, of Waukegan, died during emergency surgery due to extensive blood loss, Lake County Coroner Howard Cooper said. Toxicology results are pending.

During the police investigation, an eyewitness told officers who was responsible, and Celis was arrested, authorities said.

Celis appeared in Lake County bond court Monday. He is due back in court March 1.
