Hospital event 'goes red' to raise awareness of women's heart health

Memorial Hospital recognized American Heart Health Month by hosting a "Go Red For Women, Wine and Chocolate Pairing" event on Feb. 21 at the Chester Country Club.

Attendees of the event enjoyed a wine and chocolate pairing by Keller Ford of Primo Vino, using Askinosie Chocolate and select wines. Eric Winters with PRP wine also served complementary wine during the event. A heart healthy meal was provided by Memorial's Dietary Department.

Special guest speakers included Susan Sloop from the University of Illinois Extension Program, who presented information on "How High Do you Bounce", and educated the audience on resilient characteristics. Family Physician and Geriatric Specialist Dr. James Kirkpatrick spoke about "Know Your Numbers" and ways you can prevent heart disease. Melissa Soellner, registered dietitian and nutritionist, discussed healthy food alternatives. Kristi Williams, registered nurse, provided free blood checks as well.

The evening was capped off with prize giveaways provided by Primo Vino and PRP Wine.

Students from Chester High School's National Honor Society donated their time in helping at the event. The students were presented a monetary donation from Memorial Hospital.

The "Go Red For Women" campaign encourages awareness of the issue of women and heart disease, and also action to save more lives. The movement harnesses the energy, passion and power women have to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. It challenges them to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. It also gives them the tools they need to lead a heart healthy life. In 2010, the American Heart Association set a strategic goal of reducing death and disability from cardiovascular disease and strokes by 20 percent.

while improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent by the year 2020.
