Endorsement: Hain for Democratic Party Kane County sheriff primary

Two law enforcement veterans will square off March 20 in the Democratic primary for Kane County sheriff. Both tout a need to restructure the department as a way to combat staffing issues. Both cite a failure in leadership under current Sheriff Donald Kramer. And both bring impressive resumes to the table.

Sgt. Ron Hain has almost 20 years experience in law enforcement, and has worked hard to stem the flow of drugs into Kane County. Lt. Willie M. Mayes Sr. has more than 30 years experience and 26 with the department, including eight in corrections.

They're both passionate and professional, but, of the two, Hain has more concrete, creative ideas for improving the department. He calls for better threat assessment, more fluid communication and advanced training in light of the tragedy at Delnor Hospital last year. He advocates for a more proactive approach to cyber sex crimes targeting children. He also wants to update patrol routes to improve response times. Hain has our support.
