Driver in fatal high-speed Wheaton crash found dead along with ex-wife

A Warrenville man accused of triggering a fiery Wheaton crash that killed an Elgin woman in September 2017 was found dead in his home Thursday morning along with his ex-wife, authorities said.

Police officers from Wheaton and Warrenville found Brian Thunderkick, 62, and Laura L. Arns, also 62, while attempting to serve a court document at their house. Authorities said there were no signs of forced entry or violence.

They said the deaths were not a random act and there was no danger to the community.

The bodies were discovered on the same day DuPage County Judge George Bakalis issued a “no bond” warrant for Thunderkick after he failed to appear for a court date in connection with the fatal crash.

His attorney, Eric Telander, said he spoke to Thunderkick's ex-wife as recently as Wednesday but did not know where his client was at the time.

Thunderkick was indicted on charges of reckless homicide, attempted leaving the scene of an accident involving death and aggravated battery stemming from the Sept. 30 crash when authorities said he was driving 135 mph down Butterfield Road and struck another car from behind.

The driver of the second car, Erika Villagomez, was trapped in her vehicle as it burst into flames and she died before she could be rescued.

Thunderkick was free on home confinement after posting 10 percent of his $150,000 bail on Oct. 18.

Prosecutors had been awaiting the results of a second laboratory test before determining whether to seek additional charges against Thunderkick, including aggravated DUI.

An initial test of Thunderkick's urine came back positive for barbiturates.

Thunderkick's other attorney, Brad Telander, previously said his client suffered from tremors and seizures.
