Elgin man killed when pinned between two trucks in Lake County

An Elgin man was killed early Tuesday after he was pinned between two box-style trucks on south Fairfield Road in unincorporated Lake County, authorities said.

The 47-year-old victim was driving one of the trucks heading south on Fairfield when he pulled over in Fremont Township about 12:40 a.m. in order to shift the load in the back of his truck, Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Christopher Covelli said.

When he stopped, a second box truck driven by a 45-year-old man from Bloomingdale pulled over behind him in order to assist, Covelli said. It appears the second driver did not put his truck in park, and the box truck rolled forward and pinned the victim between the two vehicles, Covelli said.

The victim was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he later died, Covelli said.

The two drivers worked for the same refrigeration company, Covelli said.

The death remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit, and an autopsy will be conducted by the Lake County Coroner's Office on Wednesday, Covelli said. No charges have been filed.
