Aurora man faces weapons charges

A 21-year-old Aurora man faces felony charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon after police said they found a loaded .22-caliber revolver in the pocket of his pants during a weekend traffic stop.

Ronnell L. Powell of the 400 block of N. River St. also faces misdemeanor charges of not having a FOID card and obstructing identification, police said.

Powell was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over by an Aurora officer for traffic violations around 8:15 p.m. Sunday in the first block of W. New York Street. When questioning the driver, the officer smelled cannabis and saw marijuana on the lid of an ashtray cup in the center console. He called for backup and searched the four men and the vehicle for other possible contraband.

The three other men did not have anything illegal on them or in the car. Powell's obstruction charge stems from not giving the officers his real name when asked.

The driver of the vehicle, a 24-year-old Aurora man, received citations for illegally tinted windows and driving with an obstructed license plate.
