Former Roselle lawyer guilty of stealing from relatives

A disbarred lawyer formerly of Roselle was convicted of stealing thousands of dollars from his relatives.

Lino J. Menconi, 52, was found guilty this week of two counts of theft of more than $100,000, according to court records. He faces up to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced, possibly as early as March 1.

Menconi was disbarred by the Illinois Supreme Court in 2014 after the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission said he "misappropriated hundreds of thousands of dollars from a number of different clients, including his elderly and ailing aunt and uncle."

Menconi had power of attorney over his uncle who had a life insurance policy worth $700,000, prosecutors said in a motion included in the court records. In December 2009, according to the motion, Menconi directed the victim's annuity checks be sent to him at his office. In the motion, prosecutors say Menconi used $121,896.17 for his personal benefit, including payroll expenses for his law office, a country club membership, tuition for his children and disbursements to his wife. They say he used $52,373.35 for the victim's health care, nursing home, burial and other expenses.

According to prosecutors, Menconi claimed "commingling" of the victim's money and his own "constituted bad business but is not a crime."
