Truck driver dies in crash on I-294 near Rosemont

A semi-truck driver died Monday night in a four-vehicle chain reaction pileup on the Tri-State Tollway near Rosemont.

The crash, which occurred at 8:12 p.m. in the southbound lanes near the Irving Park Road toll plaza, involved two semi-trucks, a minivan and a tanker truck that overturned, authorities said.

The driver of one of the semi-trucks was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge and died a short time later from injuries sustained in the crash. Illinois State Police on Tuesday identified her as Renee A. Hodorowicz, 53, of Joliet.

State police said all vehicles were traveling in the same lane when Hodorowicz's truck rear ended one of the other semi-trucks, creating a chain reaction.

Police said Hodorowicz failed to reduce speed as the three vehicles in front of her were in slow/stopped traffic.

Two other drivers were taken to hospitals with injuries described as nonlife threatening, authorities said. Another driver refused medical treatment at the scene, according to the Rosemont Public Safety Department.

The crash shut down all lanes of southbound traffic for about four hours Monday night. The tanker truck was empty and caused no additional damage, officials said.

Illinois State Police say the crash remains under investigation.
