Freezing drizzle causing slick conditions on roads

People are being warned to be extra careful when driving to work today.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory because of freezing rain and drizzle, causing extremely slick conditions on roadways.

The advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. for portions of Cook and DuPage counties, as well as the central, east central, north central and northeast portions of Illinois.

Officials said to expect a light glaze of ice on untreated roads, parking lots and sidewalks.

The periods of freezing drizzle will cause travel difficulties, and people should be prepared for slippery roads. Motorists are urged to slow down and use caution while driving.

Sigalert has reported accidents due to slick conditions in Aurora, North Aurora, Elgin, Carol Stream and others. I-88 is closed between Main Street and Route 47 near Aurora due to a crash.

Illinois State Police are reminding motorists to use extreme caution on the roadways this morning. People should drive at slower speeds and be prepared for vehicles losing control around or ahead.

Police urge motorists to not go out on the roadways unless absolutely necessary.
