National Weather Service issues flood advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory until 9 a.m. for most of Illinois due to heavy rains.

Doppler radar shows a large area of showers and isolated thunderstorms extending from eastern Missouri into

northeast Illinois, the weather service posted in the advisory. The areas affected include portions of Cook, Lake, McHenry, Kane and DuPage counties.

Meteorologists said pockets of moderate to heavy rain are embedded within storms expected this morning. These showers and thunderstorms will continue through the early morning hours across the advisory area.

Rainfall totals could reach three quarters of an inch to an inch and a quarter, officials said. The expected rainfall is not expected to absorb into the frozen ground, and instead pool in many areas.

That pooling water could lead to minor flooding. Motorists are urged to use caution and be on the lookout for standing water.
