Streamwood veteran appearing on Discovery Channel show

Longtime Streamwood resident and U.S. Army veteran Opal Waldman, 94, will be featured in an episode of the Discovery Channel program "Operation: Fishing Freedom" on Sunday, Jan. 14.

But before that, a live viewing party for her episode will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, in Hanover Township's Veterans' Hall, inside the Senior Center at 240 S. Route 59 in Bartlett.

Waldman, who's temporarily staying with her daughter in Florida, is flying back to watch the episode with friends, neighbors and other members of the community.

"Operation: Fishing Freedom" shows veterans sharing their stories while fishing. The show's producer said it was created after more than five years of taking U.S. military veterans fishing through a nonprofit organization cofounded by host Jay Garstecki.

The purpose of the Take A Vet Fishing organization is to use fishing as a way of healing the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder on returning soldiers.
