Fire officials warn residents not to use blow torches or gas heaters as subzero temperatures continue to chill the suburbs. Recent fires in Aurora, Huntley and Algonquin were all caused by people trying to thaw frozen pipes using propane or kerosene heaters. Instead, call a plumber. Full story

Bank robbery suspect from Palatine appears in federal court

A 19-year-old Elgin man was treated for a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening yesterday. Officials ask anyone with information to come forward. Full story
