Three pets killed in Hoffman Estates fire

A dog and two birds died as a result of a fire that caused $150,000 in damage to a Hoffman Estates home Friday afternoon.

Firefighters arrived about 2:30 p.m. to find fire in the living room of a single-story home on the 500 block of Bode Road. The fire was quickly extinguished, firefighters said.

The residents were not home at the time of the fire. The birds were found dead in their cages, and attempts to resuscitate the dog were unsuccessful, according to Battalion Chief Michael Buckel.

Hoffman Estates responded with 22 firefighters and were assisted on the scene by Streamwood while Elk Grove Village, Hanover Park, Barrington and Bartlett provided manpower for Hoffman Estates' stations.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The home did not have smoke detectors and was not equipped with a sprinkler system, Buckel said.
