Cook County forest preserve hosts events to mark solstice
The Forest Preserves of Cook County will host a Solstice Bonfire and Wood Masonry Workshop on Saturday at Camp Dan Beard in Northbrook.
The workshop, which takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., will give participants a chance to learn the basic principles of cordwood construction, including structural design, wood choice and prep, and mixing mortar and building a cordwood wall.
It's open to anyone ages 10 years old and up. Space is limited; to register, call (312) 533-5751.
The bonfire is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m., and includes nature play, art making, s'mores and a food truck. Parking for the event is at nearby Potawatomi Woods. A free shuttle will be available throughout the event.
Both events are free. Camp Dan Beard is located at 200 Portwine Road in Northbrook. For more information, call (708) 386-4042.
