Holiday music a treat for students, seniors in Vernon Hills

Two generations were treated to the sounds of the season Wednesday at Brookdale Hawthorn Lakes senior living center in Vernon Hills.

Around 40 Hawthorn Lakes residents and staff members enjoyed a musical performance by 20 members from the Hawthorn Elementary North fifth grade choir and band. The choir and band performed four songs each to the group gathered in a second-floor commons area.

The school's band has made the annual appearance at Hawthorn Lakes for more than five years, but it's the first year the choir has participated.

The students wore Santa hats, blinking Christmas lights and reindeer antlers during the performance. "Jingle Bells" and "Winter Wonderland" were some of the favorites performed, as well as Hanukkah-related songs.

"The kids absolutely love coming here and performing for the residents, and the residents love hearing the kids. They can't believe they are just in fifth grade," band director Katie Bartel said. "It's just a great performance, great opportunity for both generations."
