Des Plaines man charged with choking, striking Rolling Meadows woman

A Des Plaines man was charged with home invasion and aggravated domestic battery Tuesday after authorities say he went into his ex-girlfriend's unlocked Rolling Meadows apartment while she was sleeping and attacked her.

Pedro Recendez, 22, who is on probation for possession of marijuana, was ordered held without bail.

While the woman was asleep in her bedroom and one of her roommates was in the kitchen feeding his son, Recendez entered the apartment and began pounding on the woman's bedroom door, Cook County assistant state's attorney Jennifer Gates said.

Recendez "barged in," Gates said, then squeezed the woman's throat, shoved her to the floor and began striking her.

The roommate took his son into the other bedroom to keep the boy safe, Gates said. After he left his room, the roommate saw the woman crawl from her bedroom and stepped between her and Recendez "in an attempt to de-escalate the situation," she said.

Recendez told the roommate he wanted to get some of his property from the woman's bedroom, Gates said. When the roommate stepped aside to let Recendez pass, Recendez lifted the ex-girlfriend by her throat, slammed her to the ground and punched and kicked her, Gates said.

The roommate called police and Recendez left, but he was arrested by officers soon after, Gates said.

The woman had facial bruises and swelling, marks and redness on her neck and hemorrhages in her eyes. She was treated at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Gates said.

The woman had ended her relationship with Recendez in September but remained in contact with him "from time to time," Gates said. She ended the relationship for good after Recendez showed up at her workplace uninvited, she said.

Recendez next appears in court on Jan. 4.
