Elgin drug dealer gets 12 years after 3rd conviction
An Elgin man convicted of delivering drugs for the third time will return to prison after his sentencing Friday.
Kane County Associate Judge David R. Kliment sentenced Roosevelt D. Williams, 41, of the 500 block of Walnut Avenue, to 12 years in prison.
After Williams waived his right to a jury trial, Kliment in August found him guilty of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a church, a felony.
Williams, prosecutors said, agreed in February 2016 to sell cocaine to an undercover officer for $240.
The transaction took place about 800 feet from a church in the 500 block of Standish Street in Elgin.
Williams' sentence was enhanced because of his history of drug dealing. He was convicted of drug delivery offenses in 1998 and 2004 in Kane County and served one previous term in prison.
According to Illinois law, Williams is eligible for day-for-day sentencing. He receives credit for 676 days served in the Kane County jail, where he has been held since his arrest in lieu of $200,000 bail.
