Schaumburg couple celebrate 76 years of marriage

Schaumburg couple Lena and August Guarino, who are both just on either side of their respective 100th birthdays, celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary on Thanksgiving.

They moved to a Schaumburg townhouse 30 years ago after having spent the entirety of their earlier lives in Chicago, caregiver Sherrie Littrell said.

In fact, August — who turned 100 in September — has been recognized as a co-founder of “Candy Cane Lane” in his former Schorsch Village neighborhood, back when the practice of coordinated Christmas decorating among homes was largely unknown, Littrell said.

“He's proud of being the ‘Candy Cane Lane' man,” she added, saying the Christmas tree in the couple's Schaumburg house stays up all year.

August was an electrician who owned his own business, while Lena — who turned 99 just days before last week's anniversary — worked for a bank.
