Three face burglary, car theft charges after collisions in Elmhurst

Three Chicago men have been charged in connection with a burglary and auto theft Monday morning that resulted in two stolen cars hitting each other, then one hitting a police car and the other hitting a house on Elmhurst's north side.

Deanthony Webb, 23, of the 6000 block of South Paxton Avenue; Tyrone Wilson, 19, of the 6000 block of South Chappel Avenue; and Deonte Daniel, 21, of the 6000 block of South Clyde Avenue, each are being held on $250,000 bail, charged with three counts of burglary and one count of possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Elmhurst police said they responded about 5 a.m. to a report of a prowler inside a garage on the 600 block of West Fay Avenue.

Assistant State's Attorney Amanda Meindl said responding officers spotted two vehicles, a Toyota and a Dodge, in the area and attempted to stop both cars. The drivers of both vehicles tried to flee and struck each other.

The Dodge then struck a marked squad car on the 400 block of West Avenue. The Toyota struck a house before the suspects all ran away.

Meindl said the Dodge was reported stolen in Villa Park and the Toyota was stolen in Elmhurst.

She said Daniel was found in the garage, near a handgun. Webb and Wilson were found walking down a nearby street. Meindl said two other suspects remain at large.

Police said they established a perimeter with help from neighboring police agencies and found the three men as part of a systematic search.

Meindl said all three admitted to their roles in the crimes. She said Daniel told police the other two men picked him up in Chicago in the Dodge, which he knew was stolen, and drove to Elmhurst with the intention to steal the Toyota.

Daniel also told police the gun belongs to Webb, Meindl said.

Daniel is wanted in Cook County on a $2,500 warrant in connection with a hit-and-run accident. Wilson recently was released from jail and is on probation for possession of a stolen motor vehicle in a previous case. Webb told Judge Joseph Bugos that he works full time for the Department of Human Services caring for his mother.

Police say they believe the men were entering unlocked cars and garages to steal valuables or to look for cars with keys in the ignition. Proceeds believed to be from numerous burglaries were found in the Dodge.

"In recent months, we have seen an increase in the type of brazen behavior alleged in this case throughout the Chicagoland area, particularly in the collar counties," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said after bond court. "Justice demands that we do all we can to prevent DuPage County residents from being victimized in such a manner.

"The fact that the defendants in this case were quickly apprehended and are now facing a substantial amount of time behind bars if convicted sends the message that if you commit such a crime in DuPage County, you will be held responsible for your actions."

Meindl said prosecutors are considering Class X armed violence charges against all three men. Each is next due in court on Dec. 12 before Judge John Kinsella.
