Man charged with burglary at Elmhurst College dorm

A 35-year-old Chicago man has been charged with residential burglary after police said he entered an Elmhurst College dorm room and stole a credit card from a student's purse, authorities said Tuesday.

The victim told police she was in her room at the college's Cureton Hall around 1:10 p.m. Nov. 17 when she saw a man later identified as Joseph A. Phillips of the 700 block of South Kostner looking inside her purse. When she confronted him he said he was looking for napkins and then quickly fled.

Police said they were alerted a short time later when the suspect tried to use the victim's credit card at the Walmart in Northlake. Police said a combination of eyewitnesses and technology allowed them to identify the man and take him into custody late Monday.

Police said Phillips also was wanted on several outstanding warrants.

He is being held on $150,000 bond at the DuPage County jail.
