Bartlett police warn about 'grandparent scam'

Bartlett police are warning residents to be vigilant after an increase of "grandparent scam" telephone complaints.

This scam generally involves an unexpected phone call from someone in distress who claims to be the resident's grandchild or relative.

The caller will indicate they were involved in some type of emergency situation, such as a terrible accident or an arrest, and immediately needs money or gift cards to fix their vehicle, get out of jail or pay customs fees to get back into the U.S. from another country.

The caller also might pose as an attorney or law enforcement official making contact on behalf of a grandchild or relative in such a situation.

Contact Bartlett's Crime Prevention Unit at (630) 837-0846 for more information about such scams. The department also asks that a police report immediately be filed if you've become a victim or target of a "grandparent scam."
