Police: Two people carjack man who was trying to sell them a vehicle

An 18-year-old from Chicago was being held on $1 million bail after his arrest Monday on charges he and another person carjacked at knife point a man who was selling them a vehicle in Elgin.

Darius L. Polk, of the 4300 block of West Ford City Drive, is charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking and armed robbery, according to police and Kane County court records.

Elgin police responded to a call at 5:46 p.m. from a man who said his car was stolen at knife point on the 300 block of St. Charles Street near downtown and just east of the Fox River.

The man said he arranged to meet two people who wanted to buy the vehicle. The victim met a man later identified as Polk and a female juvenile and went with them on a test drive, police said.

During the test drive, the female pulled a knife and told the victim to get out of the vehicle. Polk demanded the man give him his belongings, police said.

The man was not injured and called police, who found the victims' vehicle on the 200 block of Michigan Street, along with the female, who was arrested. Officers established a perimeter and called in a police dog to find Polk on the 0-99 block of Center Street, where he also was arrested, police said.

Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda noted the department's lobby is always open and can be a safe, supervised meeting place for people selling goods.

"While certainly not blaming the victim in any way, please remember that our police department is a good place to suggest meeting when selling items to people you don't know," Swoboda wrote in a Facebook post. "There is a parking deck across the street, and parking spots in front of our station. We strive to help keep you safe during your sales transactions with strangers whenever possible."

Polk faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of the most severe charge.

The girl arrested was taken to a juvenile facility.
