Sacrifices of veterans recalled and celebrated around the Northwest suburbs

Many schools and other institutions in the Northwest suburbs marked Veterans Day on Friday, as the official day falls on the weekend.

Events ranged from the lighthearted - a pie-throwing contest at Canton Middle School to raise money for the military charity Salute, Inc., based in Arlington Heights - to the somber - a 50th commemoration pinning ceremony of veterans by U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi at Trickster Art Gallery in Schaumburg.

Several schools served free breakfasts to veterans, who then visited with students in classrooms and at assemblies. Veterans were treated to music at a free brass quintet performance at the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre in Arlington Heights and their sacrifices were recalled at a "To Honor and Remember" ceremony at Northwest Community Hospital.

Ceremonies sponsored by local posts of the American Legion and VFW are planned for today in more than a half-dozen Northwest suburbs.
