Pumpkins roll in Lake in the Hills

The Second Annual Great Pumpkin Roll was held Saturday at Butch Hagele Beach in Lake in the Hills.

People rolled a pumpkin down a steep hill and watched how far it traveled ... or how it smashed.

"There is a technique to it," explained Kristi Brewer, parks and recreation department supervisor. "It's not how fast you roll it. You have to look for the bumps and plan your angle."

Besides the pumpkin roll, anyone could launch a small gourd over Woods Creek Lake with the use of a large slingshot. Organizers also collected unwanted, unopened Halloween candy for Operation Gratitude. Donations will be distributed to deployed troops, veterans, new recruits and first responders. Cards and letters of gratitude were also accepted.
