Police: Man lied about gunshot wound, faked St. Charles home burglary

A 28-year-old man lied about being wounded during a burglary attempt at his parents' St. Charles home last week, and instead shot up parts of the home himself, police said.

Timothy B. Fay is accused of firing at least 30 rounds from four different guns into walls and furniture in his parents' home; one round lodged in the outside wall of a neighbor's home.

Fay, of the 4500 block of Camden Lane, Yorkville, initially told police he was shot by a burglar around 2:30 p.m. Oct. 26, prompting authorities to put nearby schools on soft lockdown while other departments and officers were called to assist in a manhunt. Fay had a gunshot wound to his left arm/shoulder, police said.

"Based on the nature of the call, we had a lot of man hours on the belief there was an armed intruder," St. Charles Deputy Police Chief David Kintz said.

As the investigation continued, Fay's story began to unravel.

Kintz said investigators obtained a search warrant and observed more than 30 bullet holes in walls, furniture and a garage door at the home on Grand View Court. One round was fired inside the home, but exited and became lodged in the exterior wall of a neighbor's home. Kintz said bullets and spent shell casings from four different caliber rounds were located in the home.

"Most of the rounds were fired in the basement," Kintz said, adding Fay, who was hospitalized after the episode, was not talking. "We had to piece this together without his cooperation."

Fay is charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm from outside a building into another, reckless discharge of a firearm and disorderly conduct of filing false police report, all of which are felonies, according to court records. The most severe charge carries a punishment of up to 30 years in prison with no chance of probation.

Fay is at an undisclosed hospital and will be served with the warrants when he is released, Kintz said. Authorities don't have a time frame as to when that will occur.

The bail on the charges is $200,000.
