2 dead in apparent murder-suicide in Plainfield, officials say

Police say a man fatally shot his ex-wife during an apparent murder-suicide that began in a Jewel-Osco parking lot and led to a police standoff at a Plainfield home, according an ABC 7 report.

Officers were called about 12:30 p.m. to a shooting at the Jewel-Osco at 13460 S. Route 59, where they found a woman who had been shot in the parking lot, ABC 7 reported. She was taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital and later declared dead.

Authorities later performed a welfare check at the man's home a few miles away on Walnut Circle, ABC 7 reported. When officers arrived, they heard a gunshot, and the man was found inside a vehicle in the townhouse garage.

The identities of the people involved were not immediately available.

Plainfield police posted a notice to their Facebook page about 2:30 p.m., alerting residents to the investigation.

"We currently have 2 major crime scenes going on. At Jewel at 135th/59 and an active armed barricaded situation on walnut circle near 119th," the post said.

Officers asked people in the avoid the area, even after the situation had been secured around 4 p.m., according to a later post.

Police have said they will issue more information Monday.
